The Night Shift Young Company is a 5 day workshop this February Half Term for 16-21 year olds who are interested in developing their creative performance and devising skills in a fun, safe and professional environment.

Zoo Co are a professional theatre company based in Croydon. We are making a new play this year called Night Shift, which will be performed at Fairfield Halls by a professional company of actors from Zoo Co.

The Night Shift Young Company will help shape the story and offer their own ideas during this workshop as to what should be in the play, as well as learning lots of new skills and getting a taste of what it’s like to be in an professional ensemble.

You will work with a professional director, movement director and an established playwright to explore the ideas of Night Shift to help us create a show you would want to come and see. The playwright is Paula B Stanic, who has worked at The National, Young Vic, Soho Theatre and many other London venues.

So, what is Night Shift about?

Night Shift is set on one night in Croydon, which is possibly the last night on earth, but the characters in the story don’t know that. We are looking at reasons people are awake in the middle of the night - maybe they are NHS workers, cleaners, railway staff, a new mum, an insomniac, a party goer on their way home. How does it feel to be awake when you think everybody else is asleep? What does Croydon look like at night?

Night Shift will include d/Deaf and hearing actors and leaders.

This workshop is open to d/Deaf and hearing young people age 16-21. We will provide interpreters and there will be a chance to learn/ brush up on your BSL skills, too. There will be both hearing and d/Deaf creatives working with you during this 5 day workshop.

Everyday can be different when we are developing a new play, but here are some of the things we expect to focus on:

  • Playing games and warming up

  • Acting

  • Movement

  • Telling stories visually

  • Story structures

  • Working as an ensemble

  • Creative risk-taking

  • Creating accessible theatre

This is a really good opportunity for people who:

  • Are thinking about careers in theatre - it doesn’t have to be acting

  • Love acting and want to do more of it even if they don’t want to become an actor

  • Want to find out how to devise your own work or tell your own story

  • Want to gain experience working with a professional theatre company (you can put this on your CV and talk about it in interviews!)

  • Are interested in creating accessible work and improving their BSL skills

There are 15 spaces available on the course, and we anticipate that this will be competitive, so please give yourself time to apply and check out our FAQ’s section for any further questions.

We can’t wait to receive your applications.
